Is the first day of childcare sneaking up on you? Check out our list of must-pack items to ensure a smooth start to early childhood education.

The first day of childcare has a way of sneaking up on you. One minute you’re touring the Centre, the next you’re standing in your kitchen staring at a very small backpack and wondering how something so tiny needs so much stuff.

Here’s the good news: if you’re joining Explorers Early Learning, you’re already ahead. A lot of the big essentials are taken care of. This includes meals and nutrition, nappies, sunscreen and bedding. What does this mean for parents and packing for childcare? It means you can focus on what actually matters: setting your child up for a confident, comfortable day.

This guide breaks it all down, clearly, realistically, and by age group, so you know exactly what to pack for childcare (and what you can leave at home).

First Things First: What Explorers Early Learning Provides

Before you start packing like you’re preparing for a weekend away, let’s simplify things. At Explorers, your child already has access to:

  • Nutritious meals and snacks throughout the day
  • Nappies and wipes
  • Sunscreen
  • Bedding for rest time
  • Formula (if required)

Translation? You don’t need to pack food, bulky supplies, or half your nursery. Instead, your role is to personalise your child’s day, including comfort, clothing, and the little things that help them feel secure.

The Golden Rule: Pack for Real Life

Childcare is messy, in the best way possible.

We’re talking about painting through our Visual Arts program, mud kitchens, water play, spontaneous weather changes and the kind of learning that doesn’t stay clean but is authentic to babies, toddlers and kindergarten children. So when thinking about what to pack for childcare, prioritise:

  • Practical over perfect
  • Comfortable over cute
  • Durable over delicate

If you wouldn’t want it covered in paint…don’t send it.

What to Pack for Childcare: The Everyday Essentials

Regardless of age, every child should arrive with:

  •  A labelled bag: Everything starts here. Label everything, seriously.
  • A reusable water bottle: Explorers encourage water consumption throughout the day, so pack one that’s easy for your child to use.
  •  Spare clothes: Mess is part of the curriculum. Pack extra for outdoor play, water play and toilet training moments
  • Weather-appropriate clothing: Summer clothing includes wide-brim or legionnaires hat (not caps) and for winter, think jumpers, jackets and beanies.
  • Comfort item: A soft toy, blanket or something familiar can make all the difference, especially in those early weeks.
  • Wet bag: For the inevitable “we had too much fun” outfit change.
What to Pack for Childcare Babies

What to Pack for Childcare: Babies Edition

Packing babies is less about quantity and more about routine. At this stage, consistency is everything. The goal? Replicate home as closely as possible. This isn’t about packing more; it’s about packing smart.

Babies thrive on familiarity. A specific bottle, a certain sleep cue, even a particular comfort toy can help ease transitions and reduce separation anxiety.

Daily Baby Checklist

  • Bottles (labelled)
  • Breast milk or formula
  • Dummy/pacifier (if used)
  • Comfort item for sleep
  • Sleep suit or sleeping bag (if preferred)
  • Nappy cream (if required)
  • 2–3 full outfit changes
  • Bibs (especially for younger infants)

Explorers will handle nappies, wipes, meals (when age-appropriate), and bedding, but your baby’s feeding and sleep preferences still matter.

Pro tip: Hand milk directly to Educators for safe storage, don’t leave it in the bag.

What to Pack for Childcare: Toddlers Edition

When packing a bag for your toddler, you’re also supporting their autonomy and facilitating the foundations of self-reliance that they begin to experience at this crucial age.

For example, packing clothes they can unzip and alter themselves as well as shoes they can comfortably manage are small but important details when packing for your toddler. They’re exploring independence, testing boundaries, and (often) starting toilet training, which means your packing list needs to level up.

Daily Toddler Checklist

  • 2–3 changes of clothes
  • Extra underwear (if toilet training)
  • Spare shoes
  • Water bottle
  • Comfort item (if still needed)
  • Weather-appropriate layers

If Toilet Training:

Pack more than you think you’ll need:

  • 3+ outfits
  • Multiple pairs of underwear
  • Easy-to-remove clothing

What to Pack for Childcare: Kindergarten Edition

Kindergarteners will have opinions on what they want and don’t want in their bags. Therefore, it’s important that they are brought into the decision making and can help pack their own bag.

They know what they like, what they don’t, and exactly which jumper is “their favourite.” This is your chance to involve them in the process. In turn, building confidence and furthering their independence, particularly before their transition to primary school.

Daily Kindergarten Checklist

  • 1–2 spare outfits
  • Water bottle
  • Hat (year-round in Australia)
  • Weather-appropriate clothing
  • Optional comfort item (if needed)

By this stage, most children are toilet trained, so you can scale back spare clothes. However, it’s always good to still have a spare set included.

What if Your Child Requires Prescription Medication?

If your child requires prescription medication throughout the day, please hand it directly to your child’s Room Leader and speak with reception to fill out the necessary forms. For children’s safety, please do not pack the medication along with your child’s other belongings.

What Not to Pack for Childcare

While the focus and worry is always what to pack for childcare, there are also some specific things that should always be left at home or not included. This is just as important.

  • Open-toed shoes or impractical clothing: Think safe, secure, and play-ready.dients, ensuring your child won’t go hungry!
  • Food and snacks: Explorers provides all meals to ensure safety around allergies and intolerances.
  • Unlabelled items: If it’s not labelled… it’s probably not coming home.
  • Valuable or sentimental toys: Comfort items are great. Irreplaceable ones? Best to leave those at home.
