What is Imagination Play?

Imagination play (often called imaginative or pretend play) happens when children use their creativity to invent scenarios, roles, stories and worlds. It might look like children playing “families,” pretending to run a shop, acting out a story they’ve heard, or creating entirely new narratives inspired by their environment.

Unlike instructional activities with a fixed outcome, imagination play is child-led. There are no right or wrong answers, only possibilities. Children decide what happens next, who they will be and how the story unfolds. This freedom allows them to experiment with ideas, emotions and relationships in a way that is both safe and joyful.

In 2023, a study from Monash University found that babies and toddlers can in fact engage in imagination play. This landmark discovery rectifying previously held beliefs that this age group was unable to do so.

“Imaginary play is integral to the development of the psychological function of imagination. This function is vital for comprehending abstract concepts, as well as thinking about the past and the future, explains Australian Research Council Laureate Professor Marilyn Fleer, from Monash University.

“Imagination empowers us to create and combine familiar experiences in novel ways, envisioning things that do not yet exist.”

These findings in turn confirm the significant and profound impact and role imaginative play has in early childhood education.

The Benefits of Imagination Play
