Long Day Care

For children in the Kindergarten years, long day care can include a funded Kindergarten program delivered by qualified early childhood teachers, alongside the broader care, routines and relationships children experience across the day.

Long day care centres provide care and education throughout the day, supporting children across every stage of early development. Programs are guided by the Early Years Learning Framework, Australia’s national framework for supporting children’s learning from birth to 5 years, and delivered by qualified educators who understand how to nurture children’s wellbeing, confidence, independence and sense of belonging.

Long day care centres may also provide meals and offer a range of learning experiences such as music, movement, gardening, creative arts, language, sensory play and outdoor exploration.

All long day care services must meet the National Quality Standard and are assessed and rated to ensure children are cared for in safe, high-quality environments.

Educators working in long day care are required to hold, or be actively working towards, recognised early childhood qualifications. This may include:

• Certificate III in Early Childhood Education
• Diploma of Early Childhood Education
• Bachelor of Education, Early Childhood, or equivalent

Educators are also required to hold important safety and wellbeing training, including:

• Working with Children Check
• First Aid Training
• CPR Training
• Asthma and Anaphylaxis Training
• Child Protection Training

Sessional kindergarten differs from long day care because it usually operates in shorter blocks, often around three to five hours at a time, over two or three days per week. In Victoria, children can usually begin kindergarten from 3 years old, with two years of kindergarten available before school.

Sessional kindergarten may be run by local councils, community organisations, churches, private providers or independent schools. Fees, funding, session times and inclusions can vary between providers.

In some sessional kindergarten settings, children may need to bring their own food, learning materials or wear a uniform, depending on the service.

Kindergarten teachers in sessional kindergarten must hold an approved early childhood teaching qualification, such as:
